The Molecular & Materials Characterization group within the Analytical Research & Development department is seeking a highly motivated and technically focused individual interested in positively impacting Merck’s pipeline from discovery through development and commercial launch. This position is for an Associate Principal Scientist to be a key member of a team responsible for the physicochemical characterization of pharmaceutical materials, including small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), process, and in some cases drug-product intermediates. Responsibilities include characterization of amorphous and crystalline phases as well as performing crystallizations using focused manual experiments and/or screening platforms for identification of phases in the support of the discovery and development of pharmaceuticals. The ideal candidate will be expected to play a leading role in the development of novel techniques for the physicochemical characterization of the surface and bulk of pharmaceutical materials and to identify and contribute to efforts for adopting new technologies and approaches related to rational crystallization design. While the majority of materials will be small molecules, there will be opportunities to perform biophysical characterization and crystallization of complex molecules such as synthetic peptides, bioconjugates and small proteins.

The successful candidate must be able to collaborate in a fast-paced, integrated, multidisciplinary team environment. Communication and collaboration with development teams, including colleagues in discovery and process chemistry, chemical engineering, preformulation and formulation sciences, to identify critical API properties and support process development activities leading to the control of critical API attributes is expected. The ideal candidate will have knowledge in both physical organic and synthetic organic chemistry and experience in one or more areas such as linear and non-linear spectroscopy, phase behavior of materials, biophysical characterization, structure-property relationships, salt and crystal form screening, and solid-state analysis (e.g. X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, microscopy, Raman/IR, dynamic/gravimetric vapor sorption). Experience in late stage development, including development, validation and/or transfer of solid-state methods for API and intermediates in support of drug substance manufacture and authoring of relevant sections of regulatory filings, is preferred. And experience leading teams in development is desirable.

Education Minimum Requirement:

Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Physical Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field with at least 4 years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry or M.S. with at least 8 years of relevant experience.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Ph.D in Physical Chemistry, Physical Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry or M.S. in Physical Chemistry, Physical Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry.

  • Experience in X-ray diffraction, crystallization, form selection and/or solid-state characterization of organic small molecules

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated creativity, and strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with cross-functional interactions.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in late stage development, including API attributes definition, solid-state methods development, validation and/or transfer in support of drug substance manufacture, and authoring of relevant sections of regulatory filings

  • Experience with biophysical characterization of complex molecules such as synthetic peptides, bioconjugates and/or small proteins
