As a VP/DMM , you will be responsible for managing the buying and merchandising of assigned classifications of merchandise, conceptualizing strategies for short and long range buying objectives, as well as monitoring open to buy liquidity, trends and ladder plans of the area. Training and developing Buyers and building domestic and foreign vendor relationships will be a priority.

  • Executes sales and profit objectives; creates business vision, sets direction, thinks for the future

  • Develops and executes key short and long term strategy, close-outs/in season, up fronts, and appropriate vendor mix:

  • Reads market to maximize business opportunities

  • Sets standards that define value, taking into account a dynamic marketplace

  • Vigorously shops stores and competition as a tool to continually assess value

  • Maximizes uptrending and minimizes downtrending businesses by appropriately using Ladder Plan and other reporting tools

  • Sees new business opportunities; identifies trends, new markets, and leads buying team to pursue these opportunities

  • Manages process in order to insure appropriate fashion and quality

  • Understands priorities of the business, maintains focus; keeps priorities clear and simple

  • Aligns and flexes department resources to meet changing business demands; takes a dynamic approach to structuring staff, travel schedules, uncovering new ways to “get the job done”

  • Manages, trains, and develops Buyers and Associate Buyers; trains Buyers and Associate Buyers in buying techniques and understanding value, fashion, price, quality and timing and delivery issues

  • Liaises with SVP, GMM to set objectives, develop long and short term strategies and resolve problems

  • Develops, recommends and implements the Business Plan for assigned merchandise area

  • Establishes and implements margin and sales objectives

  • Develops seasonal ladder plans to reflect buying strategies

  • Routinely visits market weekly to enhance vendor relationships, assess opportunities, evaluate market conditions/trends, negotiate arrangements and train and develop Buyers and Associate Buyers

  • Routinely shops for direct and indirect competition for assortment value and market intelligence

  • Manages inventory, liquidating OTB effectively, both with GMM and buying group

  • Responsibility for significant sales volume

  • Makes determinations on merchandise assortments and profitability of departments (e.g. mark-on, markdowns, and quantities); reviews and makes recommendations on ladder plans and financial plans

  • Oversees hiring, promotions, terminations and associate relations decisions for department

The ideal candidate is an experienced DMM-level retail merchant with a background in branded merchandise. Preference will be given to candidates with a track record of delivering sustained growth and attracting and mentoring strong talent. The successful candidate will be a strong cross-functional partner and a driver of collaborative, team-oriented corporate culture. Off-price retail experience desirable but not required; experience with fashion apparel product desirable, but candidates from many category backgrounds will be considered.

Knowledge and Skills

  • A proven track record of success leading a fashion merchandising team within a branded retail business of significant volume/scale; strong knowledge of and focus on the off-price business and philosophy preferred

  • Experience in a complex, fast-paced, high volume retail environment; ability to make decisions quickly and flexibility to adapt to frequently changing priorities

  • Ability to build and maintain positive vendor relationships at all levels

  • An understanding of and affinity for the Burlington customer and understanding of branded, off-price product and trend

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills; ability to translate great merchandise content into bottom line profit

  • Strategic agility to see ahead clearly and anticipate future consequences and trends accurately

  • Ability to partner closely with the Planning organization

  • The ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the Burlington organization and build relationships across all functional areas

  • A strong management orientation with an understanding of how to coach, mentor, and develop teams, and drive positive change

  • Demonstrate ability to adapt and grow in an off price model

  • Ability to travel to NYC weekly
